A Boudoir Experience for Photographers

Creating a boudoir experience for photographers, in my Richmond studio, is always special. Most of the time, I only see my peers behind the camera. I see them busy directing, fixing details, and creating art for their own clients. Rarely do I get to see them in that vulnerable space of being photographed themselves.

I’ve known Mary for years. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside her on wedding days as my second photographer. Working with her this time was a bit different though. Instead of running around and managing timelines, in all black outfits (haha), it was just the two of us, hanging out like friends, playing dress up, and letting her step fully into this softer side of herself.

I’ll admit… I did feel intimidated at first to have another photographer in front of my camera. There’s this pressure that comes with knowing they already understand posing, lighting, and angles. I found myself in my head afraid that they will judge my process. But over time, I realized something that completely shifted the way I see it: in front of the camera, we’re all the same.

We all need direction.
We all want to feel beautiful.
We all want to feel seen.

And that’s the magic of boudoir.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in front of a lens a hundred times or never at all. The boudoir experience is about letting yourself be guided and leaning into vulnerability.

Photographing Mary reminded me of that truth. For her, it wasn’t about “performing” for the camera. It was about having fun, and her trusting in me to direct her. It was about her giving herself permission to simply be present. And in that space, I got to see her as more than just the photographer I usually work alongside. I got to see her as radiant, playful, relaxed, and fierce (in a different way than I have before).

That’s what boudoir is all about. Boudoir is about showing up, letting go, and trusting that you are already enough to come as you are.

If you’ve been curious about what it might feel like to be in front of the camera in this way, I’d love to create that space for you.
